A Violent Life

Une vie violente

Directed by Thierry de Peretti

Trailer

In this complex story of politics, loyalty, and identity, a Corsican resistance fighter returns to his homeland despite the threat of death.

Synopsis

Despite the death threat hanging over his head, Stéphane decides to return to Corsica to attend the funeral of his best friend and comrade in arms, Christophe, murdered the day before. It’s an opportunity for Stéphane to reminisce about the events of the 1990s, that led him, a cultured petty bourgeois from Bastia, to move from small crime onto political radicalization and the underground movement. Caught up in a decade old conflict between native Corsicans and immigrants from mainland France, Stéphane becomes a member of a violent Marxist revolutionary cell bent on asserting Nationalist goals against encroaching Mafia-style powers. A chilling portrait of a young man’s violent rise and fall, set in the unique social and cultural climate of Corsica. UNE VIE VIOLENTE (A Violent Life) premiered at the Semaine de la Critique of the Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened as a Special Screening and attracted international attention. The film was also nominated at the 14th Seville European Film Festival, where it won the Award for Best Screenplay, and received an additional nomination for the Giraldillo de Oro for Best Film. "A complex, intense and physical tale of crime and punishment." (Variety)
