I Still Hide to Smoke

À mon âge je me cache encore pour fumer

Directed by Rayhana Obermeyer

Trailer

Situated in Algiers, this hammam is a place of encounter for women. The fragile balance threatens to tip when a pregnant woman in distress seeks help.

Synopsis

In the heart of the hammam, far from the accusing gaze of men, mothers, lovers, virgins and Islamic fanatics, butts and burqas, mingle and mix, confront one another, with laughter, tears, rage, the Bible and the Koran… before the flash of a dagger and the silence of God. The plot focuses on a single day in which political tensions, personal disappointments, and family expectations intersect. Obermeyer, herself a playwright and actress, combines direct dialogue with precise observation and shows how private life inevitably collides with social constraints. The women's encounters reveal different perspectives: from the desire for self-determination to the fear of religious and social pressure. The film focuses on emotional clarity and creates an impressive ensemble picture. I STILL HIDE TO SMOKE has been shown at several international festivals, including the International Film Festival of Kerala. The film also attracted a lot of attention on European platforms such as Cineuropa for its courageous narrative style and its direct approach to political issues. The positive response underscores the significance of this work, which offers a rare glimpse into the realities of women's lives and raises the question of how much freedom is possible behind closed doors.
