The search for the owner of a cell phone leads a young pregnant woman into the queer subculture of Buenos Aires.
Synopsis
Victoria is pregnant, but doesn't want to deal with her pregnancy. She also keeps getting angry phone calls that are actually intended for a certain TONY. The caller thinks Victoria is the new partner of this stranger and insults her violently. Driven by curiosity and confusion, Victoria sets out to find the mysterious Tony, which leads her deep into the queer underground scene of Buenos Aires.
The Argentinian web series TONY, written by Malena Filmus and co-directed with Rocío Blanco, consists of eight episodes and was produced by the university channel UN3. Combining adventure, drama and surreal elements, the series offers an intense insight into the LGBTQ+ culture of the Argentine capital. In addition to Malena Filmus in the leading role, other well-known actors such as Daniel Hendler, Lola Berthet and Martín Garabal can be seen.
TONY has received international acclaim and was named “Best Short Series” at the 2021 Seriencamp Festival in Munich. Malena Filmus also received the award for “Best Actress” at the German festival Die Seriale. Other honors include the “Starlet Amets Award” at Bilbao Seriesland 2020 and the award for “Best Film Music” at Buenos Aires Series 2020. The series was also presented at renowned festivals such as Canneseries and Marseille Webfest.
With TONY, the creators manage to address social taboos in Catholic Argentina, such as the legalization of abortion and the visibility of queer subculture. The series offers a gripping look into the subcultures of Buenos Aires, challenging traditional notions of identity and society.
