Robe of Gems

After her divorce, Isabel moves out of the city with her two children to her family's abandoned country house. She soon discovers that her housekeeper María's sister has disappeared. When Isabel offers her help, the two women form an unspoken pact to find the missing woman. Meanwhile, Roberta, the police commander in charge of the investigation, tries to free her son from the clutches of the cartels. The landscape is full of confusion and danger, but despite the circumstances, determination in the face of fate remains. ROBE OF GEMS is a haunting drama—a visual poem between silence and latent danger. In her feature film debut, Natalia López Gallardo paints an incredibly powerful portrait of female resilience: Isabel, María, and Roberta fight to assert their place in the shadow of a patriarchal structure of violence. With sweeping landscape shots, intense close-ups, and a sparse narrative rhythm, the film mostly leaves the violence off-screen, creating a sense of constant threat. The silent power of the images, coupled with the psychological depth of the characters, transforms Robe of Gems into a harrowing statement against the disappearance of people in rural Mexico. The film celebrated its world premiere on February 11, 2022, in competition at the Berlinale, where it was awarded the Silver Bear Jury Prize. It has since been screened at international festivals including the Istanbul Film Festival, New Directors/New Films (USA), Jerusalem Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, San Sebastián, and the BFI London Film Festival.
