Low Life

Young people. A possible relief. A curse runs through the city, papers carry death, bodies fall. During the night of the demonstration, Carmen meets Hussain, a young afghan poet; crazy in love, the couple won’t separate again. But, terrorized by the idea of him being arrested, Carmen forbids him to go out and shuts herself away with him. The lovers spend their days making love… little by little, Hussain gets the strange feeling that she keeps watch on him. LOW LIFE follows a group of students, artists, and activists who meet in Lyon and think about their future. Migration, social inequality, and the question of personal freedom play a central role. Klotz and Perceval interweave documentary elements with fictional moments, creating an atmospherically dense impression of an attitude towards life that is characterized by hope, anger, and vulnerability. The staging relies on long shots, reduced dialogue, and an open structure that gives the characters space to find themselves. The film was shown in competition at the Locarno Film Festival, where it attracted particular attention for its poetic, political style. The work was also presented and discussed at other international festivals, including the Viennale and Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in New York. This festival presence underscores the significance of LOW LIFE within contemporary French auteur cinema, which impressively combines social issues and individual experiences.
