A FÁBRICA DE NADA begins when workers at an elevator factory in Portugal discover that machinery and materials are being secretly removed during the night. Suspecting that management plans to shut down the factory and relocate production abroad, they immediately intervene and decide to occupy the building in order to protect the remaining equipment. As management representatives attempt to calm the situation through negotiations, severance offers and carefully staged conversations, the workers gradually understand the full scale of the planned closure. Faced with unemployment and economic uncertainty, they are forced to confront not only the company’s decisions, but also their own ideas about labor, solidarity and collective responsibility. What follows is not a conventional labor drama, but an open-ended reflection on work and capitalism in contemporary Europe. Meetings, arguments, songs and everyday routines unfold alongside moments of exhaustion, doubt and unexpected humor. The occupied factory slowly transforms into a space where political ideals and practical realities collide. Directed by Pedro Pinho, A FÁBRICA DE NADA premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs) at the Cannes Film Festival 2017, where it received the FIPRESCI Prize. Blending social realism, musical elements and collective performance, the film received broad international acclaim and became a striking portrait of workers resisting economic erasure.
