Akiplesa - Toxic

TOXIC follows Marija, a teenage girl who spends the summer with her grandmother in an industrial backwater of Lithuania. In a world where any kind of difference quickly becomes a reason for exclusion, she finds herself exposed to bullying, navigating an environment shaped by harshness and quiet hostility. The story carries the directness of social realism, yet remains attentive to those living at the margins. After a confrontation with Kristina, another girl from the same neglected surroundings, Marija is drawn toward the same modeling school that attracts many local girls. The institution promises a way out through beauty and success, but its routines pull the girls deeper into competition, self-doubt and bodily control. As Marija and Kristina grow closer, their relationship develops within this increasingly pressurized environment. Their bond offers moments of closeness and understanding, even as the structures around them push them toward more extreme forms of self-perception and behavior. Set against a backdrop of limited prospects, the story traces how young women search for recognition and agency in a system that reduces them to appearances. As a debut feature, TOXIC won the Golden Leopard for Best Film at the Locarno Film Festival 2024, along with the Swatch First Feature Award and the Ecumenical Jury Prize.
