EUREKA begins as a black-and-white western. In a frontier town shaped by violence, exhaustion and fading myths, a weary gunslinger named Murphy, played by Viggo Mortensen, drifts through a world that feels both familiar and strangely unreal. Yet the film quickly reveals that it has little interest in remaining within the boundaries of a single genre. From there, Lisandro Alonso moves across places, eras and perspectives. On the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, tribal police officer Alaina navigates the routines and challenges of everyday life while responding to calls that reveal the social realities facing her community. As the film continues to transform, it opens itself to other voices, landscapes and histories, connecting different generations and experiences across the Americas. Rather than telling a linear story, EUREKA unfolds as a cinematic journey through interconnected lives, memories and territories. Moving between realism and dream, observation and myth, the film explores questions of identity, displacement and belonging. Across its shifting forms and locations, Alonso links Indigenous histories and experiences across North and South America, creating a work that continually reinvents itself. Directed by Lisandro Alonso, EUREKA premiered in the Cannes Premiere section of the Cannes Film Festival 2023. Starring Viggo Mortensen, Chiara Mastroianni, Alaina Clifford and Rafi Pitts, the film combines western, social drama, road movie and spiritual quest into an ambitious meditation on history, time and survival.
