THE FLATS

THE FLATS is an intimate return to a childhood marked by murder, revenge and fear. Joe was nine when his uncle was killed in Belfast, and the trauma has never left him; now an adult, he revisits that past from the high-rise flat where he lives, carrying memories that still feel immediate. The film follows Joe as recollection turns into a form of re-enactment. In THE FLATS, remembered events are staged and restaged until the border between what was lived and what is performed begins to blur. The tension comes less from explanation than from the slow, uneasy movement between present-day presence and the weight of what happened before. Beyond Joe’s story, THE FLATS reflects on the long aftermath of political violence and on the children who grow up inside it. It points to the scale of loss without losing sight of individual grief, showing how private pain can become inseparable from public history. The film asks what justice, memory and responsibility can mean when the past continues to structure the present. Alessandra Celesia, who has explored the boundary between theatre and film in her work, shapes THE FLATS as a documentary in which testimony and performance meet. That approach lets remembrance become visible, fragile and contested at once. THE FLATS stays close to its subject while opening a larger reflection on conflict, repair and the difficult work of looking back.
