Cliff, who lives in a small desert town, gets a surprise visit from his con artist mother. Chaos ensues as he is led down a wild path full of secrets.

Synopsis

LUNAR SWAY follows Cliff, a young bisexual man drifting through life in the fictional desert town of Mooncrest. Working as a neon-sign maker and caught in a routine of fleeting romances and restless longing, his quiet existence is disrupted when Marg, a charismatic woman claiming to be his birth mother, suddenly arrives in town. As Cliff is drawn into Marg's unpredictable world, the line between truth and deception becomes increasingly blurred. Their journey unfolds through eccentric encounters, offbeat humour and unexpected emotional turns, while long-buried questions about identity, belonging and family slowly come into focus. Alongside his relationship with Stew, Cliff begins to reassess the life he has been leading. Written and directed by Nick Butler, LUNAR SWAY blends black comedy, queer coming-of-age and road-movie elements into a deliberately offbeat portrait of self-discovery. Set against the surreal atmosphere of Mooncrest, the film balances melancholy with absurdity, creating a distinctive world where unlikely connections matter as much as the secrets that threaten them. Premiering at BFI Flare 2026 after being presented in Locarno's First Look industry section in 2025, LUNAR SWAY stars Noah Parker, Liza Weil and Douglas Smith. It is a bittersweet story about chosen family, identity and finding direction in the most unexpected places.
