ActorCécile de France, born on July 17, 1975, in Namur, Belgium, is an internationally successful actress. She had her first major role in L’Art (délicat) de la séduction (2001, directed by Richard Berry), in which she played the lead role of Laure and which brought her initial attention. This was followed by the romantic comedy Irène (2002, directed by Ivan Calbérac), in which she played the title role. She celebrated her breakthrough in L'Auberge espagnole (2002, directed by Cédric Klapisch), for which she received the César Award for Most Promising Actress.
A formative later film in her career is A SECRET (original title: Un secret, 2007, directed by Claude Miller), a moving adaptation of a novel in which Cécile de France plays the role of Tania Stirn. She was nominated for a César for Best Actress for this performance.
Other outstanding works include High Tension (2003, directed by Alexandre Aja), Around the World in 80 Days (2004, directed by Frank Coraci) with Jackie Chan, Les Poupées russes (2005, directed by Cédric Klapisch), and Hereafter (2010, directed by Clint Eastwood). She gave convincing performances in Le Gamin au vélo (The Kid with a Bike, 2011, directed by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne) and Möbius (2013, directed by Éric Rochant). In Mademoiselle de Joncquières (The Price of Temptation, 2018, directed by Emmanuel Mouret), she confirmed her presence in contemporary cinema. On television, she is known for her role as Sofia in The Young Pope (2016, directed by Paolo Sorrentino) and its sequel The New Pope.
