Marianne Jean-Baptiste

Marianne Jean-Baptiste is a British actress, screenwriter, and composer who has gained international recognition for her powerful roles and remarkable expressiveness. After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, she initially worked in theater before gaining worldwide attention through her collaboration with director Mike Leigh. In Mike Leigh's SECRET AND LIES (1996), she played Hortense, a young woman who finds her biological mother. The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival and earned Jean-Baptiste an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress—the first Black British actress ever to receive such an honor.
