Phyllis Logan

Phyllis Logan (born January 11, 1956 in Paisley, Scotland) is a British actress who has gained widespread recognition in both film and television. After training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, she began her career on stage and soon moved into film and television. She became known to international audiences through her role in SECRETS & LIES (1996, directed by Mike Leigh). The drama, which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, features Logan in a supporting role as Monica. The film is considered one of the most important British contributions of the 1990s and brought worldwide attention not only to the director but also to the cast. Phyllis Logan had already celebrated her breakthrough with Another Time, Another Place (1983, directed by Michael Radford). For her portrayal of Janie, she won the BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer and became one of the greatest talents in British cinema overnight. Other films include Shooting Fish (1997, directed by Stefan Schwartz) and Secrets of the Pharaohs (2001). Logan is particularly popular for her role as housekeeper Mrs. Hughes in the award-winning series Downton Abbey (2010–2015, directed by various directors), for which she received international acclaim.
