Synopsis
Laura Halding-Hoppenheit was one of the first activists fighting AIDS in Germany. She was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her commitment. During the AIDS crisis, Laura was there for her friends from the very beginning, helping them financially and fighting against prejudice. Laura loves gay people, and gay people love Laura. At one point, she owned three gay bars in Stuttgart.
LAURA – THE JEWEL OF STUTTGART, a work by Rosa von Praunheim, traces the biography of Laura Halding-Hoppenheit with a clear documentary style. The film focuses on her work as an activist, restaurateur, and central figure in Stuttgart's LGBTQIA+ community. The production refrains from theatrical exaggeration and focuses on personal encounters, memories, and voices from her circle. The combination of a direct perspective, local roots, and political stance makes LAURA - THE JEWEL OF STUTTGART an impressive contemporary document about commitment, visibility, and the significance of a single personality for an entire community.
