THE WOMAN IN THE FIFTH follows Tom Ricks, an American writer who arrives in Paris hoping to reconnect with his young daughter after the collapse of his marriage. Instead, he finds himself increasingly isolated, drifting through unfamiliar neighborhoods, cheap hotels and precarious jobs while struggling to regain control over his life. Cut off from stability and emotionally unraveling, Tom takes work as a night watchman on the outskirts of the city. Paris gradually transforms from a place of possibility into a disorienting landscape marked by loneliness, paranoia and quiet menace. The further he slips into uncertainty, the more fragile his grip on reality becomes. Everything shifts when Tom meets Margit, a mysterious widow living in the Fifth Arrondissement. Their intense relationship quickly takes on an obsessive quality, and strange events begin to accumulate around him. As desire, memory and fear intertwine, the film increasingly blurs the boundaries between psychological projection and reality. Directed by Paweł Pawlikowski and based on the novel by Douglas Kennedy, THE WOMAN IN THE FIFTH premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2011. Starring Ethan Hawke, Kristin Scott Thomas and Joanna Kulig, the film combines psychological thriller, noir and existential drama into an atmosphere of mounting unease and ambiguity.
