Volker Spengler, who collaborated with Fassbinder, Schlingensief and Pollesch and whose performance in 'In a Year with 13 Moons' is one of the most impressive acting achievements in German cinema, is the center of the film. Various associates of Spengler - actors, directors, musicians, prominent figures in the film and theater scene - have gathered at a Berlin pub and speak about Volker - anecdotally reminiscing about first encounters and embarrassing moments, admiration and irritation. Spengler, who was still alive at the time of filming, sits at the table in some scenes. Fritz Kortner said to the young actor during a rehearsal, "Spengler, you are the downfall of the West."
