Lola enjoys her happy life with Bruno, her partner, when an unexpected pregnancy revolutionizes all her plans.

Synopsis

Lola has a good life with her partner Bruno until an unexpected pregnancy turns everything upside down. Although Lola has always been clear that she doesn't want to be a mother, she now feels pressured by society's expectations and has to face her inner fears. During the three days they have to wait until her appointment at the clinic, Lola talks to her friends and family to be sure of her decision. Bruno never saw himself as a father either. Until now. MAMIFERA by Liliana Torres tells the story of a woman in her early forties who never wanted children—and suddenly finds herself confronted with the possibility. With a keen sense of emotional nuance, the film shows Lola's conversations with friends, family members, and her partner Bruno, who also never expected to become a father. In quiet, honest images, MAMIFERA deals with social expectations, relationship roles, and female self-determination. Torres refrains from offering simple answers, leaving room for doubt, overwhelm, and ambivalence. Supported by a sensitive screenplay and a strong lead performance from María Rodriguez Soto, a quiet but powerful film unfolds about self-determination, courage, and the right to choose not to be a mother—without having to explain yourself. At the same time, it becomes clear how much stigma still surrounds the decision not to have children.
