Genius Loci

Directed by Matteo Faccenda

Trailer

A journey across Asia in search of its spiritual essence and the hidden spirit within ourselves.

Synopsis

An invisible thread runs through cities, landscapes, and bodies: sometimes you feel it when you take your first step on foreign ground, sometimes only after days. What gives a place its character? What remains when you take away names and boundaries? This journey takes you deep into Asia—but also deep into your own consciousness. It is about encounters, rhythms, colors, sounds. About the intangible that holds everything together. Every temple, every street, every smile tells of the spirit of a place. And of what lives on in us. GENIUS LOCI is a documentary essay film by Matteo Faccenda, who sets out in search of that ancient principle that was understood in classical Roman religion as the protective spirit of a place. In a contemporary interpretation, it describes the unique atmosphere of a space – and this is precisely what the film attempts to make tangible. Faccenda, a graduate of the EICTV in Cuba and founder of Coralmente Film, combines landscape observations with personal reflection. The journey leads through the vast expanses of Asia – and to one's own inner spaces. The work was presented at the Visioni dal Mondo – International Documentary Festival in Milan in 2022, where it was awarded the “Riconoscimento RAI Cinema – Dedicato a Franco Scaglia.” GENIUS LOCI is an invitation to slow down, to perceive, to listen – and to rediscover the invisible.
