Interview with Wim Wenders about his vision, the significance of place in cinema, and the response to this project among Iranian filmmakers.
Synopsis
In 2021, Wim Wenders embarked on a collaborative project with six Iranian filmmakers – Pooya Abbassian, Shirin Barghnavard, Mohammadreza Farzad, Azin Feizabadi, Mina Keshavarz, and Afsaneh Salari – titled A Sense of Place. The project builds on Wenders’ distinctive approach to filmmaking, where places are not merely backdrops but central forces shaping narrative, identity, and memory.
Following a masterclass and lecture led by Wenders, the six filmmakers created individual works that explore and reinterpret the idea of A Sense of Place through their own artistic voices. In 2023, shortly before the films’ world premiere at CPH:DOX, Afsun Moshiry – the initiator of the project in collaboration with the Wim Wenders Foundation and the Pejman Foundation – conducted an in-depth interview with Wim Wenders to reflect on his vision, the significance of place in cinema, and the resonance of this project within contemporary Iranian filmmaking.
