The collaborative project by Wim Wenders "A Sense of Place": An essayistic observation of life and death framed by a panopticon.

Synopsis

Based on Wim Wenders' unique approach and under his mentorship, six Iranian films were created as part of the “A Sense of Place” project. A minimalist reflection on how we are born, live, and die in cells and seek liberation. A struggle under an omniscient gaze. This associative and self-critical journey leads through the cave village of Meymand, a secret police prison that has been converted into a museum, a dovecote, the Ekbatan high-rise residential complex, and Behesht-e Zahra, Iran's largest cemetery. HOLLOW is a long look into a showcase of mortality, a cabinet of curiosities that hides its secrets and its sickness. HOLLOW is a 2023 co-production between Germany, Iran, and France, realized as part of the project “Iran: A Sense of Place.” The series was created under the mentorship of Wim Wenders and Hella Wenders, which provided additional artistic context. The short film was presented at internationally renowned festivals such as Sheffield DocFest 2023, Filmfest Dresden 2024, and Beldocs 2024 in Belgrade. These venues gave the work visibility in the field of independent film and positioned it as an example of essayistic cinema from Iranian cinema. Its classification as a documentary film underscores its proximity to a cinematic practice that combines artistic reflection with verifiable realities.
