An immersive artistic vision exploring Romantic ideals through innovative media art and creative imagination.
Synopsis
Novalisland is a visionary media art work that explores the intersection of Romantic philosophy and contemporary artistic practice. Drawing inspiration from the 18th-century poet Novalis and his symbolic concept of the "Blue Flower," the work constructs an immersive landscape where reality and artistic imagination converge. Through innovative visual and conceptual frameworks, Novalisland invites viewers into a contemplative space that challenges conventional perceptions of narrative and form. The piece engages with themes of transcendence, creativity, and the transformative power of artistic experience, creating a unique meditation on how art shapes our understanding of the world and our place within it. This experimental work stands as a bridge between Romantic ideals and contemporary media aesthetics, offering audiences an encounter with art that transcends traditional boundaries.
NOVALISLAND is the first feature-length documentary to focus on Friedrich von Hardenberg (1772–1801), who called himself “Novalis” and is considered one of the greatest poets of the 19th century. Novalis sought to “romanticize” the world—that is, to re-enchant it by attempting to sharpen our perception of the unknown behind the familiar, and the mysterious behind the ordinary. For him, the world, the cosmos, humanity, plants, and animals ultimately remained a mystery that we can never fully grasp from just one perspective.
Novalis therefore advocated approaching these mysteries from various perspectives, including not only science but also art, poetry, mythology, and religion: a holistic view that the poet and philosopher developed as early as 1800. Above all, his conception of nature as a living counterpart is once again taking on special relevance in light of today’s ecological crises.
